The people you find stuck ...

One of the roads I like to drive is Forest Service Rd 5800 (Denny Creek). It's a section of the old road to Snoqualmie Pass. It goes up the west side of the pass between the eastbound and westbound sections of I-90. And, it is a through road. With current technology, this last fact leads to a proble...

Re: new tires, not enough snow

Good point. I might need to wear off the outer skin of rubber. I hope you are right. Because the snow wasn't deep (and I forgot my valve stem removal tool), I didn't air down the tires so they were at 20 psi. On pure ice I haven't noticed lower pressures helping, but I haven't run on pure ice that m...

new tires, not enough snow

I knew the snow wasn't good, but I had to try my new tires. So I went driving in the Snoqualmie Pass area. Well, the new tires wouldn't get me up this hill: :) https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FinxD1iuMYU/UqUdoJP4z-I/AAAAAAAAAB4/EsZQ-h813KM/w764-h573-no/IMG_2323.JPG Seriously thought, I was a bit ...

Re: Balancing wheels AND tires

Thanks for the input. Maybe with brand new tires balance won't be a problem. That's really my only complaint about my retreads. They take a lot of weight to balance them. But after being professionally balanced they do not bounce, even at freeway speeds. After nearly every trip where I air down to 5...

Balancing wheels AND tires

My current tires regularly slip on the rims when I have them aired down. Hopefully my new tires won't slip as much, but they might slip some. I'm thinking of having the rims balanced without tires on them, and then welding balance weights to them. Then I could have them balanced again with the tires...

Re: Do big lugs really help?

They are for an '89 Dodge Raider (AKA Mitsubishi Montero, AKA Mitsubishi Pajero). Granted the 315/75R16 has a diameter of only 34.5, but many so-called 35" tires are also about this diameter. Even these tires will probably rub at the front of the front tires. I will bend some of the sheet metal...

Re: Do big lugs really help?

Yep, I found the specs for the tire in a .pdf brochure from Yokohama's Canadian division. Most of the sizes have 13/32 or 14 /32 in tread depth, but the 315/75R16 has 20/32 (the only other deep tread sizes are 285/75R16 and 31X10.50R15 both with 19/32). They obviously expect these 3 sizes to be used...

Re: Do big lugs really help?

"I think your actual question should be 'Do big voids help?' " You're absolutely right, my bad. :) "... grooving by removing entire lugs" Wow, I knew posting here was a good idea. I like that concept. Cutting up a new tire doesn't bother me too much, and it would allow me...

Re: Minimum pressure

Nice pressure plots. Do you have any more information about the conditions under which they were made? For example, road speed, tire size, weight on tire? With the 30+ inch contact length in the 6 psi condition, it must be a large tire. Also, the tire seems to be wider than the 20" shown in the...

Do big lugs really help?

Currently I am running Treadwright retreaded tires with "Kedge Grip": https://www.treadwright.com/images/product/large/54_1_.jpg Ya, I know, retreads; how pathetic! But I love them. In deep snow, other rigs with bigger tires rarely do better than mine. And, on packed snow/ice I haven't see...

Minimum pressure

Matt - First, sorry about cluttering up the 101 class with more advanced techniques. ;) To avoid more cluttering of your deep snow tire article, I'll do it here instead. :D I ran some quick calculations based on some of the numbers (if I remember correctly) that you have given for your rig. Here are...
