Re: Going Deeper Going Further
Going up 2" in diameter will help but it's going to be marginal returns. You gain at most 1" of ground clearance, and aired down probably only maybe half an inch of axle clearance. You do get more footprint, which is probably a bigger deal. More important is going to be having a soft sidewall and a ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Long time lurker, first time poster. Howdy everyone. Welcome to the forum! Glad to see more people posting Incredible day today. Drove up to 3850ft almost effortlessly along I-90, just one half mile section that was a bit rough at a lower elevation. Soft blower powder on supportive crust. Peak snow ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
A video from a few weeks ago, project went corrupt before I could fix the clicky audio track so here's what we get: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Wwj9HNdcZE I went up Beckler River Road yesterday, finished clearing a fallen tree off a side road which means nobody's been up there in a very long ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Mixed things up from the normal forest roads and went to Walker Valley which was shallow-snow-wheeling top to bottom on the trails. Discovered new levels of stuck and for the first time ever had to use a snatch-block because 8000 pounds didn't move the Jeep. Surface was mostly soft snow on top of ...

Anyone want to go out on Saturday? I'm out late Friday so it'd be a mid-morning start.

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Very nice! I wonder if your 17” wheels are affecting the low pressure performance. I can’t recall ever having worse performance at lower pressure... I would think 15" wheels would be even worse. As far as I can tell, I'm not losing traction (I don't think airing down will ever hurt traction) but rat ...

Re: Snow tires
More siping, chains, or a tire better optimized for ice like an AT or even a dedicated snow tire are the solutions. Obviously these go against performance in soft snow, slush, etc. where you want a mud tire. It's just a compromise. The better you optimize a tire for mud and soft snow, the worse it's ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Put in a new power steering pump last night and finally have power steering again! With success at that, got to hit this great snow weekend. Got up to Jack Pass today. Had around 1.5 miles of trail breaking at the end which took several hours. Snow was waist deep when trying to walk around. Decent ...

Re: Mattracks vs Tires
I feel like a tire at a few PSI operates more track-like than tire-like. I do think that ground clearance (both axle and belly clearance) might be one of the biggest gains. I wouldn't be surprised if a vehicle on portal axles and 44"-54" tires performed almost as well as something on Mattracks. And ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Yeah, I think last weekend would have been good. I thought about going out this morning, but it was pretty windy, so I decided not to. It ended up being a really nice day today. I’m up for a run tomorrow morning if want. I was thinking about going out tomorrow but since it's just going to be a r ...

Re: Mattracks vs Tires
I asked someone who has them how they compared them to wheeled vehicles (he traveled with wheeled vehicles as he didn't know anyone else who had them). He said he has never been outdone by any wheeled vehicle including buggies on 44"+ tires, and the difference is huge and those vehicles don't even ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Last weekend would have been so amazing. There were feet of fresh soft snow at Stevens, but was busy skiing it instead. I went out today on Pilchuck up towards Bear Lake. Made it up to 2800ft which is lake elevation but stopped half a mile short due to a small downed tree that I didn't want to deal ...

Sure... but if you're starting in Stanwood and we're going to Green Mountain, are you sure you want to meet there? Unless there's a different Green Mountain or route I'm not aware of

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Want to meet at Darrington Shell station? You can pick a time. Jeep is good to go.
Another option out of Darrington to get well over 4000ft is the road to Whitechuck Mountain (NF-2435), very scenic road up high. Green Mountain works for me too though!

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Ok, sure I'm in on that... I'm good for going as far north as Iron Mountain, but also interested in other locations. Haven't been to Rat Trap or Green Mountain. We'd need to get above 3000ft to be on more than an inch or two of snow. However, I'm going to go do some work on the Jeep right now and ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
If anyone is still out there, I'm going to take the family out for a bit on New Years day. Not expecting anything great, but hopefully enough find a sledding hill. Do you know where? Not sure exactly where you live, if it's not too far from me I'd probably be in on it if not starting too early. Don ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Nice... I’m pretty bummed I missed out on that early snow this year. I still haven’t been out. I figured the conditions weren’t all that great with the cold we’ve had. Let me know if you want get a run in up here. The Beckler area is pretty decent. Plenty of side roads to find fresh snow. Did you se ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Went up Tinkham on I90 on Saturday morning. Rutted to I think around 4000ft. Beyond that it was impassable heavy snow on unpackable sugar. Couldn't even pound the snowpack, just stopped like hitting a brick wall. With low expectations, today I went up some side roads on Beckler River Road toward ...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2017/2018
Drove up to 4700ft on the road to Whitechuck Mountain trailhead. Except the last 0.1 miles it was rutted with some fresh storm snow on top, but it seemed to have been run by vehicles with a wheelbase a good 1.5 feet wider than mine so still a bit of work getting up (presents some unique challenges ...
