Re: WA: North end snow wheeling
Looks like I won't be skiing a second day tomorrow. Would go wheeling Sunday.

Rear Chains
Random thought, has anyone ever tried deep snow wheeling with front tires at 1PSI, and rear tires at street pressure or lightly aired down with chains on? Seems the front breaks trail, and the back follows on a surface that is work-hardened so it's less likely to sink and the chains could give it gr...

Re: Sliding Backwards
Those should do pretty good. Need siping. Are the sidewalls 3 ply? What do you have for an air gauge? Yes pretty sure they're 3 ply. I haven't siped them because I also use them in the rocks in the summer but I probably should do at least some shallow surface siping. Air gauge is just generic 0-60P...

Re: Sliding Backwards
Tires are radial c-rated 35 MTR Kevlars so sidewall shouldn't be a problem. Down at 0-1 PSI they visually appear completely flat with the rim a few inches from the ground. This is what they look like at 7-8PSI, don't have a picture when they're real low. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5662/233678843...

Re: Sliding Backwards
ok... I'll have to go do some more comparisons sometime, plenty of opportunities coming up. Every time I've been out so far, I've noticed no difference in performance in both deep snow or compact going from 5psi down to 0-1psi so I've just been leaving it in the 5-10 range for improved ground cleara...

Re: Sliding Backwards
So there's a confusion I have... isn't airing down actually significantly worse if the conditions are ice or hard compact snow where you don't need flotation? You just decrease the pressure on each tire lug and turn it into even more of a sled is my understanding, which is why narrow small tires are...

Sliding Backwards
Any tips for avoiding an out of control backwards slide when snow wheeling? I was on Tonga Ridge today and on the final steep section I was in ruts that had been beaten down to ice with a few inches of fresh on top, half way up I started spinning, lost traction, and immediately went backwards. Brake...

Re: Mt. Daniel Area Tomorrow
Nice! How high did you have to go to get out of the rain? I wish I had some higher elevation spots closer to home. Can't wait for the snow level to drop. Maybe by next weekend. It snowed the whole day everywhere east of Snoqualmie Pass (minus a tiny bit back on the road in Cle Elum on the way out)....

Re: Mt. Daniel Area Tomorrow
Deep fun day... Got to within 1 mile and 500 feet of Van Epps Pass, turned around at about 5300ft because there wasn't enough traction to push the wall and make reasonable forward progress. Conditions were not great, 6-12 inches of fresh on top of a breakable crust with feet of faceted sugar below. ...

Mt. Daniel Area Tomorrow
It's always last minute snow wheeling plans for me... heading to Mt. Daniel area tomorrow (exit 80 something on I90), snow wheeling access up to 5000ft and some hiking/snowshoeing (nothing serious, maybe towards Mt. Daniel or just up on the ridge as far as we get). Let me know if you want to come, l...

Re: Baker Tomorrow (11/15)
1000ft in town of Glacier... but the serious snow started at 4000ft. A lot has changed since then though according to the weather. And I bet there are a dozen trees down on every forest road in the stateNobody wrote:What elevation did you hit snow?

Re: Baker Tomorrow (11/15)
How'd it go? Did you see anyone up there? Great... ran into a group of Jeeps at the start of the switchbacks, we got up to the final pair of switchbacks before the leader on 40's was high-centering and not getting anywhere. Then I walked up to the lake from there since we were so close. Probably 5 ...

Re: Baker Tomorrow (11/15)
I can't make this one. I have things I need to deal with tomorrow, not to mention my gear is everywhere at the moment. The Baker snow report sure is good though. I suspect you might have a hard time making Twin Lakes. Do you have anyone going with you? I am pretty paranoid about leaving my Bronco u...

Baker Tomorrow (11/15)
Going out tomorrow to wheel the new snow, leaving Seattle area around 7am. Goal is Twin Lakes (5200ft) then hiking/snowshoeing up ~1300ft to the Winchester lookout. Baker is reporting 2 feet on the ground at 4200ft with another foot expected tonight. There are other roads in the area if that one doe...

I'm here and looking forward to winter, I have tomorrow off so might go try to find some snowy roads... Anyone know where the best early season hope usually is? Highest mountain roads within a few hours of Seattle?

Re: Wheel Valve Stems
What are you using for On-board air, CO2? Did you find snow last weekend? Air compressor, ARB Twin... lots of water comes along with the air, presumably condensation of the compression process. Found something like half an inch of snow on pavement, just playing around with the ideal tire pressure f...

Wheel Valve Stems
Any tricks on freezing valve stems? Almost every time I air up in below-zero temperatures my stems freeze up then I have to hold my hand on them for a minute to try to melt them to get them to stop leaking. Last weekend I just gave up and hoped for the best on the cap sealing after having my hand ne...
