Re: Place To Get Tires Balanced Well

You can also try balancing with a bubble, take a look at YouTube. This might take a little investment but if you're in-control, might be with it. A long shaky year with a lot of wasted parts... just got the Harbor Freight bubble balancer tonight. I guess I didn't even know what balanced tires feel ...

Snow Wheeling Weight Distribution

In general lighter weight is better for deep snow... but is there ever a time when a bit more weight in the back is better? Not for traction, but to keep the angle of attack of the vehicle from sinking. I would think maybe the rear end sinking in a bit would actually help to be able to get the vehic...

Re: TRIP PLANNING - 05/10/15 - Hart's Pass

Did this happen? From the couple patches of snow I drove on today, I can't imagine doing anything serious on that snowpack. No traction, it's just slush at this point.

I don't know why, lots of snow out there!!! https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8804/16519229844_164f1cace9_h_d.jpg When was this taken? I went to climb the Early Winter Couloir (middle line up the background spires) last weekend and curious how long ago this was... looks like there is a lot more snow i...

FS4330 and Cathedral Rock 3/22/15

FS4330 opened to wheeled vehicles last week! Road wasn't too hard but not rutted the last few miles so some fun Spring wheeling. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8701/16735867159_f0a8e21f0a.jpg Scatter Creek crossing, only about 18" deep. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7283/16715821269_1c65113e78...

As long as you remove your license plates, can you legally drive roads that are "closed to licensed motor vehicles"?

Re: Place To Get Tires Balanced Well

Rotating them did make it slightly worse but not by much. I don't think it's anything loose, went around and checked torques a while back. Might try adjustable control arms to get my caster angle back to stock. Otherwise, I guess I'll just live with it for now. It's not that bad or dangerous, I just...

looks like you are on NWhikers? nice last pic.. you're nuts to try and summit rainier with conditions like that! Yes I am on NWhikers too. This was possibly the best winter Rainier window that's been for years (now over due to the weather systems moving through this week). No snowshoes necessary fr...

Tonga Ridge 2/1/15

This winter sucks, but I'm not sitting around at home waiting for snow to never come. First we went up the Whitepine Creek Road a few miles east of Stevens Pass summit. First few miles were plowed with dusted over water ice. Get out and you just fall over (to think, before we left in the morning we ...

Re: Place To Get Tires Balanced Well

I had full death wobble once before upgrading my track bar to one with much more steel. Then I was pretty well off and only had a bit of wobbles in the 30-40mph range. I just had Discount rotate and they re-balanced them and now I have some fairly scary wobbles in the 50mph range (although fortunate...

Place To Get Tires Balanced Well

Anyone know of a place in the greater Seattle area that will balance tires really well (not road-force due to beadlocks)? Discount Tire isn't doing a good enough job to keep the wobbles away with 120 pound tire/wheels on my jeep. Not supposed to dynabead double-beadlocks although I could give it a t...

Re: Snow Saturday

Despite the forest service saying the road is open except April 1-June 15, the Mt. Daniel road is a groomed snowmobile trail so that failed. Every forest road out in Salmon La Sac area is either a snowmobile trail or posted no motorized vehicles. Then I went to the Teanaway area, went up a forest ro...

Anyone want to go try to find some snow to wheel tomorrow? Thinking Van Epps Pass might be fun to try. Might satisfy the need to bury vehicles in snow at 6000ft.

Re: Event: New Years 2015 Hangover Run (Washington)

Does it typically get gated in winter? It closes at mile 21 every winter, not sure before that which is why I'm wondering where it was closed. There's not much documentation on later in the winter since the number of people in the mountaineering and snow wheeling community is very close to zero. So...

Re: Tonga Ridge 1/4/15

As for driving on tires with low pressure, it's more about how fast than how far. You want to minimize the heat. Make no mistake, driving on flat tires is very hard on the tires. Some brands and sizes tolerate low pressure better than others. That said, my tires are something like 12 years old and ...

Tonga Ridge 1/4/15

Went to a friend's place to do some welding on my axle, smashed my finger within 5 minutes turning the finger nail into a black throbbing pain, said screw it, grabbed an ice pack, and went to the snow. Started out on a few inches of super slick packed snow. Dropped to 4psi after sliding a ways down ...
