Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

Went up Tinkham to the pit, beyond there ruts were only in for another few hundred feet. It was absolutely impossible to break trail. I had no expectations for the day, snowpack was deep bottomless unconsolidated water-saturated slush with a few inches of fresh snow on top. Always a good day when it...

Isn't Hyak a groomed ski trail?

Re: New user from Enumclaw, Wa to Snowtrek.org

If I could set it up on 40-42" tires with minimal to no lift I feel it would get us around pretty well on snow covered logging roads. If it's a dedicated snow rig, why keep lift low? If I didn't use my Jeep for street driving plus summer trail use, I'd lift it sky high. You can never be high e...

Anyone want to go wheeling on Sunday? Open to locations as far north as Darrington but I think we'd have better luck Stevens or south. Should be lots of fresh snow

Re: 1/28/17 Shuksan Attempt

Wow. Looks awesome. Was the avalanche danger high, or did you see stuff you didn't like? The NWAC forecast was moderate (2/5 on the scale, pretty typical relatively safe forecast but reserves the possibility for isolated areas of dangerous terrain, low is very rare in winter). There was a slope tha...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

I didn't hear about the Franklin Falls disaster. The berms I see around here aren't to block access, just a result of plowing. Are these obvious intentional barriers? At least some of them I believe are to discourage entry (although I don't think it's illegal to drive over... they just don't want t...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

Speaking of Tinkham, had a couple good runs all the way up to the lot since the snow fell, but went up there a couple of days ago to poke around for the second time in as many weeks, and there's still a pile of snow blocking the road, in fact there's a new one at exit 47, someone did go around the ...

1/28/17 Shuksan Attempt

Tried to get up Shuksan today, turned around at about 6000ft due to poor avalanche conditions. Pretty great ski conditions. https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/589/32427372312_63dd0377d2_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/524/32201297200_4be94ca994_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/473/32427365432_4314...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

That looks like a pretty cool road. I like the sign sticking out. Are you usually solo on these trips? Yes, almost always alone. Usually trying to find partners for skiing, so wheeling takes second priority and plans don't get made until day-of. On occasional I'll make plans and post up looking for...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

Tinkham to 3900ft today. Relatively easy trail breaking but snow is too heavy to use any speed. Crawled very well. 5-6 foot total snowpack on the roadway up there. https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/271/32092751430_c33c5c3782_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/548/32471136765_4287432998_z.jpg https://c1...

Re: Trip Report: Snowshoeing Mount Pilchuck - January 7, 2017

Thanks for the education. Not being a skier, I wasn't aware of the conflict. However in my defense, the route is the route in many parts without taking much higher effort lines. I'll certainly be more conscious in the future. I'm always on the wrong side of these conflicts :homer: If the route is t...

Re: Trip Report: Snowshoeing Mount Pilchuck - January 7, 2017

Fortunately, some backcountry skiers had already broke trail a few days prior. Saved some effort. Looks like fun, looks like you're ready to spend the night next time! FYI, snowshoeing in a skin track is really bad form, it makes it very challenging and sometimes nearly impossible to skin up. Yes I...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

Did you lose a bead, or were you just aired down that low? I was just aired down, I have double beadlocks so can't lose it. I gave up on gauges and just pull the stems and wait until I'm about 5 seconds short of nothing coming out at all. Of course only for really deep soft stuff, in this case I im...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

Went out of Darrington up towards Whitechuck Mountain. Went up two roads to about 3000ft, in both cases the ruts ended there and it was positively impossible to make even slight progress. The second time I tried I sank through at least two ice crusts and the axles just disappeared, had to do a full ...

Re: Wheeling Tomorrow

Also be careful if you go to Lake 22... someone died in an avalanche on the trail on Wednesday. Although the NWAC hazard is low/moderate, there are some really dangerous slopes right now and I hear that trail is pretty exposed. Ohh, I didn't hear about that. I'll have to look it up. We decided we'r...

Re: Wheeling Tomorrow

Thanks for the offer, I'll have to pass on that this time, getting over a cold so trying to keep it easy tomorrow with some driving. I'll probably go check out Jack's Pass, never been out there and looks like a good place with plenty of trees for self-recovery.

Wheeling Tomorrow

Anyone want to come out tomorrow? Would like to find untracked snow, any suggestions on where to go? I usually just do I90/Tonga Ridge after a storm but it hasn't snowed in way too long so I have to try harder to avoid the tracked ruts.

Re: Mount Pilchuck Lookout buried in snow

Do you know if it's open in the winter? There's also the Hidden Lake lookout (with bonus snow wheeling access!). I spent a day up there in November, just about died getting there but then there's a nice lookout with a bed waiting and it's open year round. https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/377/3119994390...
