Re: Trip Report: Snowshoeing Mount Pilchuck - January 7, 2017

Thanks for the education. Not being a skier, I wasn't aware of the conflict. However in my defense, the route is the route in many parts without taking much higher effort lines. I'll certainly be more conscious in the future. I'm always on the wrong side of these conflicts :homer: If the route is t...

Re: Trip Report: Snowshoeing Mount Pilchuck - January 7, 2017

Fortunately, some backcountry skiers had already broke trail a few days prior. Saved some effort. Looks like fun, looks like you're ready to spend the night next time! FYI, snowshoeing in a skin track is really bad form, it makes it very challenging and sometimes nearly impossible to skin up. Yes I...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

Did you lose a bead, or were you just aired down that low? I was just aired down, I have double beadlocks so can't lose it. I gave up on gauges and just pull the stems and wait until I'm about 5 seconds short of nothing coming out at all. Of course only for really deep soft stuff, in this case I im...

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

Went out of Darrington up towards Whitechuck Mountain. Went up two roads to about 3000ft, in both cases the ruts ended there and it was positively impossible to make even slight progress. The second time I tried I sank through at least two ice crusts and the axles just disappeared, had to do a full ...

Ha... great catch! This was just posted today to a discussion and I guess I ignored the year given the month and date. That's embarrassing :-(

Re: Wheeling Tomorrow

Also be careful if you go to Lake 22... someone died in an avalanche on the trail on Wednesday. Although the NWAC hazard is low/moderate, there are some really dangerous slopes right now and I hear that trail is pretty exposed. Ohh, I didn't hear about that. I'll have to look it up. We decided we'r...

Re: Wheeling Tomorrow

Thanks for the offer, I'll have to pass on that this time, getting over a cold so trying to keep it easy tomorrow with some driving. I'll probably go check out Jack's Pass, never been out there and looks like a good place with plenty of trees for self-recovery.

Wheeling Tomorrow

Anyone want to come out tomorrow? Would like to find untracked snow, any suggestions on where to go? I usually just do I90/Tonga Ridge after a storm but it hasn't snowed in way too long so I have to try harder to avoid the tracked ruts.

Re: Mount Pilchuck Lookout buried in snow

Do you know if it's open in the winter? There's also the Hidden Lake lookout (with bonus snow wheeling access!). I spent a day up there in November, just about died getting there but then there's a nice lookout with a bed waiting and it's open year round. https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/377/3119994390...

Re: WA: New Years Day snow wheeling

Make a journey south for what has to be the worst idea in the history of off-road trip planning.

I almost want to go just to see what happens when 237 rigs go snow wheeling on the same road on new years eve night but it's probably just not worth it.

Re: Trip Report: Snow Wheeling 2016/2017

Denny Creek, Hyak, and an attempt at Tinkham but too many stuck vehicles blocking the road. Hyak was untouched road. Snow was pretty decent but a little on the heavy side. Couldn't push the wall once it went over about 3.5 feet tall in front of the Jeep. https://c5.staticflickr.com/1/671/31214167580...

Re: North Cascades snow wheeling

Twin Lakes up near Baker is good if you get it at the right time, once winter really starts there's no way in just a big pile of snow on the side of the road. Early December might be good. There's not much in the immediate vicinity of Baker once winter starts as it all becomes snowmobile trails. Som...

Re: North Cascades snow wheeling

Are you talking right now or later in the winter? There is currently no snow wheeling in Washington State (the only possible exception might be Hart's pass? I'll bet it's closed the first day there'd be any wheeling though).

Re: Snow wheeling skykomish area 2016/17

I'll be looking to get out a few times this winter. No sign of snow. It was 70* at my house on Friday  It's getting close, went skiing on Baker today and there was a foot of fresh snow at 5400ft. Should be getting down to forest road level in a few weeks with some luck (although the next ...

Re: Snow wheeling skykomish area 2016/17

I live somewhat near there, and go up Stevens Pass a lot. Also will drive far for a day of good snow. Hard to beat Tonga Ridge if you get it after a storm, but it gets tracked out frequently.

Re: welding front diff spider gears

Seems crazy to me for a street vehicle, especially the front. I wouldn't even want a spool on a trail vehicle let alone something on the street. It'd put immense stress on the axles and I'd think stuff would start breaking in tight street turns (if you could even do tight street turns anymore, my tu...

Just curious, why would take a vehicle down to the frame build level and leaf spring it rather than coil spring?

38x14.5 vs. 40x13.5

Strictly for snow wheeling performance, which tire size would you think would be better? 38x14.5 for flotation or 40x13.5 for clearance?

Tinkham Night Run 2/5

Just got home from Tinkham, rained the whole time. Snow was heavy and saturated with water. Poor traction and the snow instantly turned to compact ice when moved. It wheeled alright in the ruts but the moment you got out of the ruts you just stopped. It took all 8000 pounds of winch (and just barely...
