Friggin' Brrrrr...

Post by H8PVMNT »

It was -20° F this morning. Had to wear goggles while feeding horses because my contacts were sticking. 4Runner started with a little effort, but I may have to start a fire under my older Toyota...

The snow is squeeky.

What kind of temps are you guys having?

In Western Washington, we're having a somewhat uncommon cold snap. The trend will continue for the next few days. Lows will in the mid teens and highs around 30. Heat wave for you! Hopefully we'll get some moisture next week so we can get some snow in the hills.

-30° F tonight! It gets a little sketchy when we get these kind of cold snaps. I carry a bit of fire wood with me wherever I go so you don't die if your radiator slushes up of something stupid like that. We had some freinds on their way to our house a couple years back that had their car freeze up at night when it was this cold. They were preparing to die when we went looking for them because they were an hour late and no cel service.

It's funny though, your coolant freezes up in the radiator and then your engine overheats and warps/crackes a head from lack of coolant flowing.

We're at 12F this morning. My dad's weather station is reporting 11F for Lake Stevens. Very cold for around here. The plumbers will be busy!

No they don't close school for any kind of weather around here.

On the clothes, wool seems to be the substance that separates the folks who can still operate and the folks who just give up and stay indoors. Bomber hats with real bunny fur intead of the fake stuff really help too.

Dry boots and socks are a must.

It got somewhere lower than -30° last night. The 4runner fired right up but the coolant was a slushy and the temp guage got on the hot side untill I gave ot a little rev and the water pump shoved the slush out... And that's with an oil heater going all night!

We're down to 11F now.

I can't imagine living in your temps day in and day out.

Is 11° here this morning so I am drinking coffee for a bit before I do anything. Funny though I was talking to some people from Eastern WA last night and at there school they canceled recess because kids get frost bite in about 5 min in 5° weather. Not something I remember as a kid here.

I can only remember getting in the single digits a few times. Last time was a few years ago.

My dads weather station shows he dipped down to 10F. He's probably 2 miles from you.

Well it's not so bad all the time; usually when it gets this cold for a while we get a chinnook a week or so later and see like 40°-50°.

So as it turns out we had -35° in Great Falls last night and even -37° in a few low spots. That would explain the slushy anti-freeze. My wife was driving it to a craft fair/trade/sell thing in the middle of nowhere and the 4runner was still getting hot so she shut it down for a while and limped the rest of the way in. I put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator and the reflective heat off the engine finally thawed it to the point it would cool itself and flow again. I have to go to town for a job today so I will pick up some fresh anti-freeze and mix it right. Something is not quite right if we are freezing up, probably too many water top offs over the past few summers making the mix less than ideal...

I was watering amimals this morning with a bucket from the creek and it was like making a candle, with another 1/2" of ice on the bucket every time i dipped it in the water.

Yesterday it was 0° F and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. This morning it is nearly 20° F so that's a 50+ degree difference from a couple days ago! The wind is blowing the snow around in drifts all over and it actually feels balmy. It's amazing how the deep freeze changes your perspective, a few weeks ago this would have seemed cold...

We're at about 25F now, and they're calling for some light snow changing to rain... boo :frown: It was a nice little cold snap though. Wish we would have had some snow on the ground first.

Yeah it gets pretty sketchy over there with the frozen rain and numerous stupid drivers.

Today we had the blowing snow. I hade a 370 mile work trip in the 4Runner, 60 miles of busting drifts on farm roads. The rest was just ice covered and white pack highway :(. Days like this is why my wheelin' rig is also my work truck. Sorry I failed on photos though, naturally I was running late so I didn't have much time for nonsense. I will get some next time to show some of what I do for a living.

Way up in the twenties today though!
