04-03-13 - Mt Baker

Post by n16ht5 »

Took the day off Wed and skied off the summit of Mt Baker
Image

About 4mi from the trailhead the snow started.. and it got real deep. I wouldn't have made it on 35s.

got to the trailhead about 11pm. I set up my air mattress in the back and sacked out. Mike who rode with me slept in the shed. Getting here saved us about an hour of sleep and 4mi of road slogging.

I woke up to headlights coming up the road at 5am so I got up and we hit the slope at 6... took this two hours later in the clouds

Clicked back into my skis and headed down... skied all the way from the summit to the truck. Coming down the Roman Wall.

Didn't take any more photos till the truck. The snow went from frozen windblown ice at the summit to a light layer of pow at 8k to wet slop at 5k and water skiing below that

Absolutely incredible! Was that your first time to the summit of Mount Baker? I think I'm going to have to learn to ski so you can take me up there. It appears skiing up is the preferred method too. I assume you need to be a pretty advanced skier to ski off the summit? Awesome that you had clear skies while you were on the summit. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah that was my first time to the top.. great day for it. I can ski any run on any lift I've ever been on and I felt a little uncomfortable at the crux. That said I have skied harder terrain before though
