Strictly for snow wheeling performance, which tire size would you think would be better? 38x14.5 for flotation or 40x13.5 for clearance?

Way long time ago I know but I'll answer my opinions anyways. A wider tire has more resistance and is harder to push. It's like a snowshoe vs ski questions. A taller skinnier tire will air down more like a ski and be a lot easier to push in soft deep snow and prob go a lot further. The shorter wider tire will work better on the spring type snow that packs up more where you stay on top. I'd take the taller tire all other things being equal. But the tire choice is a big deal as well as fitting the tire to the rim width as well as radial vs bias ply as well as gearing of the vehicle.
