VERLOT — A man who died in a climbing accident Saturday near Barlow Pass has been identified by friends as Franklin Bradshaw of Mukilteo.

Bradshaw died after a fall Saturday on Lewis Peak, about a mile from the pass, east of Verlot.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the accident around 5 p.m. Saturday. The original call reported a climber missing.

Bradshaw was with another climber who was not injured, Snohomish County sheriff’s Lt. Steve Dittoe said Monday.

Bradshaw reached the summit. He was reported to have stepped on a cornice, which collapsed and triggered an avalanche, Dittoe said.

Forty-one people, including volunteers from Everett Mountain Rescue and Snohomish County Search and Rescue, were involved in recovering his body from the mountain. The recovery from a snow field was technically challenging for the mountain-rescue volunteers, Dittoe said.

Friends described Bradshaw as an experienced outdoorsman who loved hiking, climbing and skiing. He also had an interest in photography.

Bradshaw’s family has been notified of the death, according to those who knew him. He had climbed the highest 100 mountains in Washington in four years — the fastest ever to do so.
Here's a sobering first hand account from his climbing partner. :frown:
